Our work has never been more important and we've got some big plans ahead

Dear Friends,

Stranger’s Guide is embarking on a new chapter—one that will bring more original writing, more events and a deeper commitment to you, our community of curious and courageous global citizens.

We launched Stranger’s Guide in 2018—in the shadow of Donald Trump’s presidency—with a bold vision: to connect readers across borders, to celebrate our shared human experiences and to explore how politics, power and culture play out in our everyday lives.

For the past six years, we’ve commissioned stories that do just that. We are an American publication, but we’ve cultivated a global network of journalists, writers and thinkers, with the strong belief that local voices are best equipped to explain their political and cultural realities.

The world is a messy, beautiful, terrible, fascinating place. Now more than ever, we need a unique approach to storytelling, one that emphasizes nuance and embraces contradictions.

So, we are taking our vision for Stranger’s Guide a step further. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be rolling out a number of new features that allow us to expand our work beyond the places featured in our print guides, to cover more cities and countries, through original articles, live events and new newsletters. (And don’t worry, we’ll still be making new print guides!)

This isn’t just a shift; it’s an expansion, an evolution, a way to do even more of what we love and to deepen our connection with you.

Our paid subscribers on Substack will now receive:

  • Vignettes: our cabinet of curiosities newsletter with facts, intimate portraits of interesting people, interviews and more, coming to your inbox weekly.
  • Weekly Long Read: available to everyone (paid subscriber or not), which shares an original essay from some of the best writers around the world.
  • Passport: a monthly behind-the-scenes look at the world of Stranger’s Guide, with notes from our team and our network of journalists around the globe, including recommendations on what we’re reading, listening to and cooking—as well as feedback from our community.
  • Close Up: an original photo essay from a different part of the world each month.
  • Field Guide: a twice monthly newsletter that traces a single theme, be it whiskey or voting, around the world through original essays, facts and photographs.
  • Print Guides: We’ll continue our signature print guides. We’ll now offer two guides per year that reflect the same care and nuance that we started with.

Become a paid subscriber on Substack today and we will send you a guide from our library.

Most importantly, this next chapter is about building community. We want to create spaces where you can engage with our work, ask questions of our authors and share your perspectives. That means more events, both online and in-person. We’ve launched our account on BlueSky and we’ll be taking advantage of Substack’s Notes and Chats features. We are a small team, but we are fiercely committed to amplifying the stories that matter.

To those who have been with us since the beginning, we can’t thank you enough.

You’ve made it possible for us to navigate the challenges of these past few years, including the uncertainty of COVID and the attacks on journalism worldwide. And now, as the world feels simultaneously more connected and more isolated than ever, we believe our mission—to bridge these divides and share meaningful stories—has never been more vital.

If you’ve ever considered supporting our work, we hope today will be the day.

Either way thank you for being part of Stranger’s Guide. We’re excited for the journey ahead.
