Running through the “city of gold,” among the hustle and bustle of daily life, you will find Spectrum, the all-women skateboarding crew who are roaming the streets of Johannesburg with confidence. The collective helps to grow a community of female skateboarders in the city, carving out a space where Blackness and femininity are not just accepted but celebrated—creating a “sisterhood of skateboarders.”
“Sisterhood of Skateboarders,” by Johannesburg’s very own, Karabo Mooki, is a photo series that explores the lives of this community built by Black women in skateboarding and focuses on identity, equality in sport and inclusion. The women of Spectrum are pushing forward for greater representation within skateboarding and forging lifelong friendships along the way.
