Citizens of Burkina Faso in West Africa had their first-ever free and fair elections just three years ago. The New York Times reported that people poured onto the streets of its capital Ouagadougou, while its new president, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, “vowed to get to work immediately ‘to open up the opportunities for a better tomorrow’”—a not-insignificant challenge considering the country’s poverty.
