China’s First Movie Studio

The first film studio in China was founded by an American: Benjamin Brodsky. The first movie it released was 1913’s The Difficult Couple, directed by Zheng Zhengqiu and Zhang Shichuan. The 30-minute silent film centers on a couple who embark on an arranged marriage. Today it’s considered “lost”—not known to exist in any archives or private collections.
